Surgical Treatment in Maple Grove

We know that occasionally a problem may come up that will require more than general orthodontic treatment. In those cases, our experts will complete a comprehensive exam and provide a proper diagnosis. At times, problems such as severe misalignments or jaw abnormalities will be seen which will require that you receive surgical treatment. In those cases, good communication is key to the success of the treatment.

What is Orthodontics Surgical Treatment?

At times a condition exists in which orthodontic care alone will not correct the problem and will require the use of orthodontics surgical treatment. This might occur with issues such as jaw irregularities or severe misalignments. Prior to the procedure, braces are typically placed and fitted and remain on the patient until total healing has occurred.

This type of treatment must be performed by an oral surgeon, typically in a hospital setting. You can be confident we will work closely with the surgeon every step of the way to ensure that the procedure is a complete success.

When is Surgery Required?

Diagnostic imaging and complete orthodontic x-rays will be performed before the decision is made to perform surgery.

Here are some examples that might require orthodontic surgical treatment:

     1. Serious misalignments
     2. Abnormalities of jaw bone
     3. Severe protruding or receding upper jaw
     4. Severe overjet (occurs when front teeth protrude over bottom ones)

For a surgical procedure, it is recommended that males be between the ages of 17 and 21 and females 14 – 16 to ensure that bone growth is complete.

The Surgical Procedure and Its Aftermath

It will be necessary to have an oral surgeon perform the surgical orthodontics treatment and he will apply general anesthesia. Typically, it will take several hours. Your braces will stay on to help keep your jaw bone and teeth stable during the process.

During surgery, bone will be shifted, removed or altered to correct the jaw movement. Tiny screws, bands or wires will be necessary to secure the bone in the proper position. These will gradually assimilate into the structure of the bone.

A period of about six weeks will be needed for complete healing and recovery. Once our orthodontists here in Maple Grove assure that recovery is complete, they will ensure the integrity of the results and continue the orthodontic part of the process. This may require a few adjustments along the way. It will take approximately one to three years for the entire process.

The effects of this combined orthodontic and surgical treatment will impact your entire life. Your jaw and teeth will function normally, but the beautiful facial symmetry and amazing smile will bring you joy every time you see it.
